BlackRock takes a dynamic approach to alternative investments as we increasingly capitalize on evolving opportunities in fast-changing markets. We offer clients strategies designed to provide returns with low correlations to the broad equity and bond markets, including private equity, real estate equity and debt, hedge funds of funds, single-strategy hedge funds, long-only absolute return strategies, commodities and structured products. Our alternative investment capabilities are fully integrated into BlackRock, allowing investment teams to benefit from the firm's considerable resources in areas such as risk management, product development, client service, and operational support.
On 30 April 2009, BlackRock hired 29 investment professionals from R3 Capital Partners. Rick Rieder, former President and CEO of R3 Capital Partners, joins as head of our Fixed Income Alternatives Portfolio Team and brings a team with expertise in trading, analysis, and research. This development enhances our credit, leveraged finance, and distressed fixed income capabilities by augmenting our global credit investment and research efforts and adding aviation/aerospace finance expertise to our investment platform, thus adding value for our clients and our shareholders.
In October 2007, BlackRock, Inc. acquired the fund of funds business of Quellos Group, LLC, forming one integrated fund of funds platform. The combined business provides hedge, private equity and real asset fund of funds to institutional and individual investors worldwide.
